[vc_row el_class=”blog-link”][vc_column][vc_column_text]A couple weeks ago the Internet witnessed a massive series of cyberattacks that knocked many popular websites like Amazon, Netflix, Reddit, Twitter, and Spotify offline. The target of these attacks was Dyn, a company that provides the Domain Name Services (DNS) for many of these high traffic websites. By targeting Dyn rather than each individual site the hackers could take down a multitude of websites at once, which is exactly what happened Friday, October 21.
To facilitate this cyberattack, the hackers accessed the Internet of Things, or any “smart object” connected to the internet. These things range from wifi-connected cameras refrigerators and even children’s toys that access the internet. All these things were made into a network of bots that attacked Dyn, causing many websites’ domains to stop working. The cyberattack was so severe that the Department of Homeland Security stepped in, and the FBI is investigating the cause behind the hacks. Currently no one has claimed responsibility for these attacks.
